During breaks, the language class is often quieter than during class. Why? Everyone is checking their phones, reading and replying to messages, or playing games. Ms. Gr\u00fcnwald often stays in the classroom. There is no teachers\u2019 lounge, so she\u2019s brought snacks from home; sometimes she uses this time to prepare for the next class or finish up what she was working on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When she\u2019s typing on her laptop, that doesn\u2019t stop the students from talking to her. Only a few walk away. She can see that out of the corner of her eye. \u201cI just need a minute,\u201d says one student, and starts talking right away. She\u2019s nervous and has probably been practicing these sentences for a long time. \u201cOver the weekend I was in Chemnitz visiting a friend. She\u2019s also taking the B2 exam, and 12 out of 16 passed. They memorized dialogues, and we always have to respond spontaneously.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A statement like that probably only drives German teachers up the wall, or maybe just Ms. Gr\u00fcnwald. Without missing a beat, she replies, \u201cB2 Beruf focuses on spontaneity. And when we do dialogues, you\u2019d rather do something else anyway. Remember Friday? Everyone was supposed to speak on different topics. But you\u2019d rather write vocabulary words, and so did your classmates. That\u2019s why I stayed standing at your table, to get something going.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A statement as pointless as a goiter. While it was true, it accomplishes nothing when accusations fly back and forth. The frustration on both sides is palpable. And Ms. Gr\u00fcnwald, still seething with anger and at a loss, searches for the right words. It would have been better to take a break, be unreachable for a while, and then simply come back after 15 minutes and get right back to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hours later, Ms. Gr\u00fcnwald is still mulling it over and searching for questions that could have resolved the whole thing. Questions are always better than accusations. Both start with an \u201cf\u201d sound, yet they\u2019re so different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what good is memorization? Can you memorize a team meeting? What\u2019s the difference between school and adult education? Which method suits whom? Sometimes Ms. Gr\u00fcnwald can\u2019t see the forest for the trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
