The implementation of the first demoSlam of Saxony in Dialogue was a real tour de force. When so many interested, curious spectators came in the evening to listen to the contrary opinions of our six slammers, all efforts of the past weeks were forgotten. Even with a few days between us, it is still not easy for us to put the countless impressions into compact words.
What probably impressed the whole team the most was the respect that all participants showed each other. In spite of sometimes serious (political) differences, our slammers opened up to each other in order to enable a cooperation, a constructive exchange on an honest, sincere, personal level. For our participants this was extremely strenuous, but also enriching and insightful.
We believe that many in the audience were as surprised and overwhelmed as we were. In spite of more than 170 spectators, you could sometimes hear a pin drop. In the end, the applause for all the slammers seemed to never stop. On this evening, both the participants and the audience had definitely managed to endure the mutual otherness.
Understanding the other without agreeing with it – the demoSlam showed us that this is difficult, exhausting and yet possible and necessary. We have to get back into conversation beyond our echo chambers and filter bubbles, the demoSlam seems to be an excellent format for people in Saxony.
“It has become a high art to listen and understand the other. Perhaps also to recognize that he is not wrong in some things. When it comes to conceding, it gets harder. It does not have to be the same. But you think about it and get away from your firmly entrenched opinion. The important thing is to talk again! This evening has impressively shown how it works.”

We would like to thank…well…all those who were there, who actively created the demoSlam of Saxony in Dialogue, our participants, Deutsches Hygiene-Museum Dresden, the Federal Program MITEINANDER REDEN, Robert Bosch Stiftung, Support Program Revolution und Demokratie of the Free State of Saxony and of course the audience, who gave us valuable feedback for the future! Finally, special thanks go to our citizen journalists, whose great contributions were presented to the public for the first time in an exhibition during the event.
See you next time – on 14 March 2020 in Nebelschütz. At 7 pm the next demoSlam will take place there in the Bjesada/parish hall.
Saxony in Dialogue tests innovative methods to (re-)activate a lively and controversial culture of conversation. Citizens from different communities enter into the inner-Saxon dialogue about everyday experiences and opinions on topics that are important for society as a whole. Two project modules (workshops, discussion events) contribute to creating encounters and exchanges between village and city dwellers from Saxony.
