Nuslätta May 2024 – Dresden spricht…

Workshops, guided tours, writing and printing workshops under the motto "Language and writing. Dresden speaks many languages"

we probably all know one or two anecdotes about language. But not every idiom or proverb can be translated 1:1 into other languages. What is “a black sheep” to some is “a white crow” to others. This year, under the motto “Dresden speaks many languages”, we want to take a creative look at “understanding” and “communicating”.

Here’s a little preview of what’s coming up in the next few months: at the “Mosaic of Languages” writing workshop, we’ll be putting together small word pictures – written or illustrated – to create a large mosaic. Just come round to the neighbourhood association around the corner or the next street festival! — Or how about this: enough of dull headlines, slogans and adverts? In the “Your poster – your message” printing workshop, we’ll be working with artist Moussa Mbarek to put language and image messages on paper using screen printing! — Prefer a small format, less “bold”? In the “ZINE design” workshop, illustrator Rosa Brockelt shows how to creatively realise stories and experiences in a small DIY book made of texts, pictures and drawings. — Discover even more? On guided tours, we get to know “inclusive places” better where language plays an important role, e.g. on a guided tour of the MDR with editor Adina Rieckmann or a city tour from the perspective of the visually impaired with Lydia Hänsel.

The next highlight awaits you this weekend: On 4 May 2024, 1-5 pm, we will be visiting the “Welt der Bücher” (“World of Books”) literature pop-up store on Hauptstraße with two workshops. Drop by and enrich the “mosaic of languages” with your favourite proverb. In addition, we will not only be sewing figures out of fabric in the “Fish and Birds” sewing café, but also want to talk about what peace and freedom can mean for each of us.
