Colombia

After six years, Pauline moved back to Colombia – and Mario was immediately up for the adventure. In September 2024, the time had finally come: one couple, two backpacks and six weeks of exploring, hiking and relaxing away from everyday life.

From Bogotá, we travelled to Guaviare, which lies virtually on the doorstep of the Amazon and is a region scarred by civil war and bandas criminales, but still very untouched. There, we went on several hikes with guides through dense rainforest, to millennia-old murals and ‘colourful’ rivers. Our journey continued into the deepest Amazon, via Leticia to Amacayacu National Park. There we spent a few days in a Ticuna village and gained insights into the history, customs and life in the smouldering and never silent rainforest. A big change of scene awaited us in the Caribbean: on the one hand, the hustle and bustle of touristy Santa Marta and Tayrona National Park, and on the other, the strenuous hike through indigenous territories up to Ciudad Perdida, the lost city.

After a few weeks in the tropical heat, we ended our holiday in the more moderate temperatures of Bogotá. We visited the old town and the Monserrate monastery, bought souvenirs and enjoyed the cuisine. It was with a touch of sadness that we began our journey home.
