I’m listening – a year in silence

Silent encounters & mindful listening with artist Daniel Beerstecher

Artist Daniel Beerstecher is spending a year hiking silently through Germany, devoting himself entirely to the power of listening. Through this radical performance, he invites people along his path to experience firsthand the transformative effect of silence and deep, attentive listening. The hike becomes his mobile studio, where encounters take place that create genuine connections.

Essence of the performance

In direct encounters, Daniel Beerstecher explores whether intensive listening and genuine interest in the other person can open up spaces in which profound, authentic stories emerge. Silence becomes an art form—a form of presence that works beyond words. His experiences as a performer and mindfulness teacher show that deep connections can only be formed through full attention. That is why “contemplative dyads” – meditative one-on-one conversations – and conscious hiking together play a central role. Silence creates inner stillness; when external words are absent, thoughts calm down and space is created for free, honest development.

Meaning in our time

In a world full of polarization, self-promotion, and attention-driven dynamics, where anger and interruptions dominate, this project highlights the quiet virtue of listening. Genuine listening is the greatest gift we can give each other—a space of undivided attention where what is hidden in the noise of everyday life becomes visible. Encountering the silent one says more than many words and invites genuine peace.

Daniel Beerstecher

Daniel Beerstecher – born in Schwäbisch Hall in 1979 – lives and works in Stuttgart, Rio de Janeiro, and while traveling. After studying at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart (2003–2010), he received numerous scholarships and awards and exhibits his work internationally – in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Istanbul, Frankfurt, Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, and Berlin.

His artistic practice encompasses installations, travel and video performances in which he encounters random audiences and shifts art from traditional spaces into public spaces. Encounters and dialogues with people form the heart of his work—they open up spaces for new perspectives and challenge familiar orders.

New art project

Starting on June 20, 2025, Daniel Beerstecher will embark on a year-long silent hike through Germany. This radical performance project is dedicated entirely to the power of listening and invites people to experience the transformative effect of silence and presence.

I’m listening – a year in silence

We create safe spaces for mindful storytelling and deep listening. At the heart of this are contemplative Dyads—intense dialogues in which people are free to speak while the artist remains silent, attentive, and nonjudgmental. In addition, Walk in Silence invites participants to walk through the landscape in silence, listen to their own perceptions, and share their thoughts in a protected circle. In this way, a rare place is created in an increasingly loud and polarized world where listening, empathy, and new understanding can find their place again.
