At the beginning of October 2025, our Czech neighbours not only elected a new parliament – for a group of eight committed cultural activists from Dresden, this year’s association trip to the fascinating city of Liberec (Reichenberg) in northern Bohemia was also on the agenda. With its mix of Art Nouveau architecture, mountains on its doorstep and lively cultural scene, Liberec is an ideal destination for anyone looking to combine city and nature experiences.
Day 1 – 2 October 2025: Arrival and first impressions
Participants travelled individually, allowing them to plan their own flexible itineraries. The historic Hotel Praha in the city centre, just a few steps away from the impressive town hall, served as their ‘base camp’ – ideal for exploring Liberec on foot.
On the first evening, the group stopped off at the cult pub Tataz Pakaz, where regional cuisine, Czech beer and a creative scene come together. In this relaxed atmosphere, it quickly became clear that this weekend would certainly be a highlight, not only professionally but also personally.

Day 2 – 3 October 2025: Nature, architecture & party night
Despite the crisp morning air, some of our fellow travellers started the day with a jog through the city before everyone gathered for breakfast in the hotel’s Art Nouveau dining room. Afterwards, we made our way to the Liberec Botanical Garden, which, with its pavilions, tropical houses, marine aquariums and around 9,000 plant species, is one of the most exciting gardens in Czechia.
Lunch was at the cosy Tulipan bistro, which impressed with its modern cuisine and relaxed atmosphere. The afternoon featured a special highlight: a visit to the Technical University of Liberec – Faculty of Art and Architecture, where Blanka Kirchner (artist & lecturer) provided insights into teaching, studios and the local creative scene.

Day 3 – 4 October 2025: Art & cake, folklore & football
Saturday began in a relaxed manner at the Liberec Regional Gallery (Galerie Lázně), which is housed in the historic municipal baths. The Liberec Museum of Fine Arts – as the gallery is also known – is the fifth largest art collection in Czechia and houses more than 2,000 paintings, over 16,000 prints and drawings, and around 3,000 sculptures and objects – a real hotspot for European art. After so much art, it was good to recharge our batteries at the Art Café Lázně, located directly in the gallery. An ideal place to let the impressions sink in over coffee and cake.
In the afternoon, the group attended the ‘major cultural event’ of the State Assembly of German Associations in the Czech Republic, which took place in Liberec in 2025 and combined German-Czech history, folklore and contemporary culture.
Things got sporty in the evening with the FC Slovan Liberec vs. Bohemians Prague 1905 match, which the ‘ultras’ of the tour group watched live at the stadium. Even though the game ended in a draw, the atmosphere in the stands was great and showed once again how much football is part of the city’s everyday culture.
The day ended at the unpretentious Stereo Café, a meeting place for locals and visitors alike, which is appreciated for its relaxed atmosphere.
The night before, the bar papír had already provided a long, dance-filled evening with its ‘In the Yuma by Places’ party series and electronic music ranging from Afro House to Dark Tech House.

Day 4 – 5 October 2025: Farewell on the Jeschken
On the last day, early risers took the opportunity to hike up Ještěd, Liberec’s 1,012-metre-high local mountain. At its summit stands the futuristic Ještěd television tower, an iconic 1960s structure that combines a hotel, restaurant and broadcasting station and is considered a landmark of the entire region.
From here, there are sweeping views over Liberec, the Jizera Mountains and as far as Poland – a perfect place to reflect on the weekend. With many inspiring impressions, new contacts and a strengthened sense of community, the group set off on their return journey to Dresden.

Conclusion: Why it’s so wonderful to be part of Kultur Aktiv club trips
This club trip to Liberec was a shining example of how culture, shared experiences and exchange bring people together. A diverse programme offered something for everyone – whether art lovers, nature enthusiasts or those who enjoy socialising. The individual freedoms allowed for a very personalised experience, which was particularly appreciated.
Every detail, from the collaboration with dedicated cultural partners to the spontaneous adventures of pub crawls and morning jogs, gave this weekend a lively and exciting atmosphere. The trip proved once again how valuable such experiences are for the club – as a source of inspiration, friendship and cultural enrichment.
Děkujeme, Liberec – we are already looking forward to our next trip together!
