‘‘Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors’ was a furious outburst of power, an overwhelming blow that nobody would have expected from staid Soviet cinema. Parajanov tells an archaic drama of love, blood revenge and obsession with death, full of demons and magic, set among the Carpathian mountain peasants of the Hutsuls; he tells it partly in stark tableaux, partly with a chasing, whirling, delirious camera, almost without dialogue, carried by the bizarre music of jew’s harps, alphorns, bagpipes and choral singing – and it all comes together to form a vision of strange, flaming power.’ (Urs Jenny in SPIEGEL)

As part of our exhibition ‘After Parajanov’, we are celebrating the 100th birthday of the legendary Caucasian director Sergei Parajanov. On 7 November 2024 at 7 pm, we cordially invite you to an exciting evening of discussion with film expert Uwe Penckert. Together we will use examples from the masterpiece ‘Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors’ to immerse ourselves in the creative world of ideas of this extraordinary director.

The moving Romeo and Juliet story, set in the picturesque Ukrainian Carpathian Mountains, catapulted Parajanov onto the international stage and broke with the strict conventions of socialist realism in Soviet cinema of the 1960s. This visually stunning and poetic film was based on a novel by Mychajlo Kozjubynskyj and was one of the first films in the Soviet Union to be shot in Ukrainian. Despite its official recognition, Parajanov was imprisoned for several years and his film was banned from cinemas. Today, ‘Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors’ is considered one of the most important works of poetic Ukrainian cinema and continues to inspire audiences worldwide. Join us and discover the magic and depth of Parajanov’s art!

After Parajanov – Cinematographic photo collages for his 100th birthday

We are delighted to present the renowned Georgian photographer Yuri Mechitov once again at the Galerie nEUROPA. For many years, Mechitov accompanied the career of the influential and controversial Soviet director Sergei Parajanov with his camera. He created milestones in Soviet film history with films such as “The Shadows of Our Forgotten Ancestors” and “The Color of Pomegranates”. The photographer’s collaboration and friendship with Parajanov resulted in an impressive photographic biography of the director.
