Wechowyna – Christmas in the Ukrainian Carpathians

In the Ukrainian Carpathians, the land of the Hutsuls, the custom of the “Koliada” is cultivated every year. From the villages of the Carpathians, the star singers meet in Verkhovina and Krivoirivna and compete in singing “Nedilo Rano”. For the Hutsuls, this song is a Christmas carol, thanksgiving for the harvest and praise of their homeland at the same time. And they vow to defend it: “Raise the silver Bartka”. In the lecture, Jan Oelker reports on three visits to Verkhovina in the Carpathian mountains.
