“Tell me a childhood prank” or “What was your first love?” – Biographical experiences were the focus of the intercultural project LebensBILD. bioGraphische Begegnungen (2020). The participants – with and without a migration background – were able to creatively design moments from their own lives in encounter and workshop formats and exchange ideas with others about their life paths.

21 artists and illustrators from Dresden – with and without a migration background – opened their work spaces for studio workshops: they presented their personal careers and gave the participants an understanding of their art and working techniques. At encounter cafés and biography workshops, the participants got into conversation and got to know different parts of the city with their cultural and social institutions. In tandem sessions, a participant and an artist/illustrator exchanged ideas about a particular biographical moment and illustrated it.

Exhibition in the Central Library at Kulturpalast

The exhibition not only shows different life paths, but also gives an insight into the diversity of artistic techniques of the artists and illustrators. The illustrations and comics created during the workshop sessions with participants from different backgrounds, religions and languages are autobiographical, honest, memorable and often poetic. These picture stories give the narrators a voice by making their memories and experiences visible. They also bear witness to Dresden’s diverse urban society.

Free admission. The exhibition can be visited during the opening hours of the Central Library.
