BERINGIA ’92 – the longest sled dog race in the world
In the winter of 1992, immediately after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Beringia sled dog race took place in the impassable north of Kamchatka as far as southern Chukotka. Close to the classic Olympic idea, where participation counts more than victory, the race was organised primarily for the inhabitants of the villages along the route. Five teams battled over the entire distance of 2,044 kilometres through this remote region on the far eastern periphery of Russia, making it the longest sled dog race in the world to date.
