Dear cultural activists,
in May 1975, the photographer Bohdan Holomíček took his first photographs of Václav Havel in Hrádeček. Havel liked the pictures, and this led to a close friendship. In the years that followed, Holomíček documented how theatre people, writers, musicians and dissidents gathered at Havel’s country estate. He remained by Havel’s side even after 1989, when Havel became President of Czechoslovakia. His final photographs were taken in 2011, a week before Havel’s death.
We have been exhibiting a selection of these photographs at the nEUROPA Gallery since September. The photographs are from his private collection and show a side of Havel that official photographs rarely capture.
The exhibition runs until 13 November. To mark the end of the exhibition, Bohdan Holomíček will visit us once more in Dresden. During an artist talk, he will speak about his work and his friendship with Havel.
