Poetry of the Folk Doll

Workshops on Ukrainian and Black Sea German puppet traditions

Two workshops on Ukrainian and Black Sea German doll-making traditions: as participants make dolls together, conversations arise about memories, family histories and customs passed down through the generations.

What remains when traditions are passed on?

Due to migration and the war in Ukraine, interest in Ukrainian history and culture has grown in Dresden. At the same time, there is often a lack of opportunities to get to know cultural heritage and traditional customs first-hand and in a practical way, whilst engaging in conversation with people who bring a wide variety of experiences to the table.

In ‘Poetry of the Folk Doll’, you can experience this tradition for yourselves. In two workshops, you will make your own doll, learn about the crafting process behind it, and share what has been passed down in your own families.

A Focus on Ukrainian and German History

Another key focus is the historical links between Ukraine and Germany. Through traditional dolls made by the Black Sea Germans, participants will learn more about the history of this community, its significance for the region, and the interconnections between German and Ukrainian culture.

This creates a space for learning, exchange and interaction that appeals to members of the Ukrainian community as well as to anyone new to the subject.

Come and join our workshops!

The workshops are open to anyone who fancies discovering something new: members of the Ukrainian community, students and cultural practitioners from the fields of history, cultural studies, folklore or arts and crafts, and anyone interested in traditions. You don’t need any prior knowledge or craft experience. The workshops are open to young people aged 14 and over and adults.

The speaker and expert Olena Saidel will begin by introducing the history and significance of the dolls. You will then make your own doll under her guidance. There will also be time for conversations about memories, family histories and what you’ve learnt from previous generations. Yuliia Saidel will be assisting with translation.
