Photography and drawings by Matthias Jackisch
“The Baroque wants this dispute against the freedom of form” once wrote the art critic Wilhelm Hausenstein, whose reflections on the essence of the Baroque were related to the sculptures of Matthias Bernhard Braun by the sculptor Matthias Jackisch in his book “Hausen im Stein”. Braun, who was born in Tyrol, created his opus magnum between 1713 and 1732 in the North East Bohemian town of Kuks at the castle of Count Franz Anton von Sporck with numerous groups of figures and a sculpture park in the forest, thus advancing to become one of the most important sculptors of the Bohemian Baroque.
The sculptor and draughtsman Matthias Jackisch, who comes from Oberlausitz and learned his trade in the baroque city of Dresden, was inspired by Braun’s work three centuries later. Jackisch, who does not shy away from the “freedom of form”, takes up the baroque swing of Braun’s sculptures in his drawings and, in interplay with his photographs taken in Kuks, conducts a dialogue with his colleague and namesake across centuries and national borders.
An event organised by Kultur Aktiv e.V. as part of the Pragomania Festival. With the kind support of the Euroregion Elbe/Labe.
