Sewing café “Gemeinsam mittendrin”

In August, our Ukrainian sewing café is going on tour with ‘Dresden speaks…’! Yuliya, Natasha, Olga and Hanna will be moving their needlework studio with needles, thread and pieces of fabric to the Kreativ.Raum.Börse on Hauptstraße every Wednesday!

We invite you to join us for an evening of embroidery, conversation and the opportunity to create something of your own from paper, lace and imagination. We will provide a few needles, threads and pieces of fabric. If you like, you can of course bring your own materials! Experience does not matter. Suitable for young and old tailors

Bobbin lace, threads and fabrics – as a link between generations

Lacemaking or crocheting lace is an extraordinary art. It was once the wealth of entire cities and fine lace was a precious commodity. Many of our grandmothers and great-grandmothers mastered this art, and old lace can still be found in our homes. They inspire us with their patterns and the fineness of their work. But in modern life, it is not easy to find a place for them.

The sewing café, which was created as a place for Ukrainian women who had to leave their homeland because of the war to meet, help each other and work together creatively, received great and invaluable support from ordinary people who brought us threads, needles and fabrics for our work. Among these gifts were lace brought by the granddaughters and nieces of the craftswomen who had once woven them.

It is difficult to put into words the feeling you get when you hold a treasure of human skill, love and memory in your hands. It is a past that lives on in the present. It is an invisible web of destinies that weaves itself into astonishing patterns of human encounters and life paths.

The event takes place in cooperation with BÜLOWH Counselling and Meeting Centre. From 5 August to 12 September, they are organising the ‘Kreativ.Raum.Börse’ on Hauptstraße 42-44. Under the motto ‘Gemeinsam mittendrin 60+’, you can meet neighbours, listen, join in the conversation, create community, try out new things, think outside the box, drink coffee and much more. – for young and old – here in Neustadt.
