Photos, portraits and life stories speak their own language
We say salam, bonjour, hello and get talking to each other. We met more or less by chance and without the “Dresden spricht” project from Kultur Aktiv e.V., we probably wouldn’t have got to know each other at all.
We all learned German at some point for a job, a new life in Germany or for love, and the grammar caused sleepless nights, as did the past tense and other peculiarities of this language, which has eight times more words than English.
It is surprisingly interesting to reflect on language. Language can be blue or orange, hard and soft, you can dream and swear in it and grow fond of words.+
The importance of language as a mediator for thinking, intelligence and knowledge was something we were able to feel almost painfully through the interviews.
You feel like you’re in a cocoon if you don’t yet have an adequate command of the language. How quickly you are labeled and can’t immediately show what you can do. Many people experience this every year and perhaps you do too.
We cordially invite you to the exhibition “Dresden speaks many languages”. On display are portraits and life stories of Dresdeners who came to our city many years ago and for whom the German language was still foreign at the time.
How do you feel about this? Do you also have a migration story? Feel free to share your experiences with us. We look forward to getting to know you.
The project is funded by the State Ministry for Social Affairs and Social Cohesion. This measure is co-financed with tax funds on the basis of the budget passed by the Saxon state parliament within the framework of the state programme Integrative Maßnahmen.
