Moldova – Terra Incognita on the Edge of Europe
If you’ve always wanted to know where Munchausen rode on a cannonball or where one of the largest wine cellars in the world is located, then this travel report might interest you.
The Republic of Moldova or Moldavia – as the small country in south-eastern Central Europe officially calls itself, so as not to be confused with the region of the same name in Romania – is not exactly one of the main tourist destinations in this country. It is often called the land without parents or the poorhouse of Europe. The conflict with the internationally unrecognised region of Transnistria still shapes the image of the country in our country. Yet Moldova has much more to offer besides hospitable people.
We want to take you on a journey to one of the largest wine cellars in the world and to a young winemaker who has set up his wine cellar in a former engine hall. We will visit the picturesquely situated monastery in Orheiul Vechi, travel to the south of the country to Comrat, the capital of the Gagauz minority of Turkic origin, and the north to the “Gypsy barons” in Soroca. We also visit the fortress where Münchhausen practised riding the cannonball and a former German village in a region formerly known as Bessarabia. Finally, we will cross the Dnister River and take a look around the unrecognised region of Transnistria.
The lecture will take you on a time and geographical journey to this unknown European country.
It’s that time again. Our already traditional Winterreisen event series continues from March to April 2022. The lectures will take place in a new location! We are happy to be guests at veränderbar (artderkultur) this year. A wide variety of people will talk about their travel experiences in a cosy atmosphere, so that even in colder weather you can revel in the faraway places.
