Repairing, mending, telling stories – from everyday to artistic, sewing is a practice that can connect. In Dresden, various initiatives and associations offer sewing cafés. People come together to exchange ideas and learn from each other. Each sewing café has a different focus.
Sewing Café on Tour
Yuliya Firsova – our favourite sewing café host – is moving the handicrafts room, complete with needles, yarn and pieces of fabric, from Neustadt to the south of Dresden this week. The sewing café meeting starts at 4 p.m. in the SLUB Makerspace, where various initiatives and associations from Dresden meet to offer their sewing projects in one afternoon – from table to table a new project that the visitors can try out and implement immediately. Among others, the sewing cafés of Kultur Aktiv e.V. and Kaleb e.V. and the Green Office of the TU offer an upcycling project.
You don’t want to go that far out?
Then drop by our weekly Sewing Café in the Gallery nEUROPA: You are cordially invited to the weekly sewing café. Here you can chat, get creative together and create beautiful things! Participation is free of charge. We provide a few needles, yarns and pieces of fabric. If you like, you can of course bring your own materials! Experience does not matter.
Every Wednesday – 18:00 – Sewing toys at the sewing café
After patchwork, now toys! Yes, exactly! It’s quicker than you think: in the twinkling of an eye, fabric scraps are turned into little animals, figures, dolls and anything else the imagination can come up with.
And what do we do with all the toys when it all becomes too much? Give them to the children, the little ones and the big ones! There are always opportunities to do so, and when December arrives, and with it Saint Nicholas, the joy is even greater.
Background
Since autumn 2022, Yuliya Firsova, a teacher from Odesa, has been inviting people to the sewing café in the nEUROPA gallery. Together with other women who have fled Ukraine, they have created a place where they could unwind, talk, sing, share their problems and experience support and warmth.
Open gallery – what is it?
In our gallery Galerie nEUROPA we not only present exhibitions of contemporary photographers with a connection to Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, but the space is also open for open meetings, coffee rounds, games evenings, workshops, seminars, think tanks, and so on.
Here you can find all other dates and event formats of our Open Gallery.
